Mavoko water and sanitation company limited (MAVWASCO) is a public water and sanitation utility company that operates within Mavoko sub-county, Machakos county in the republic of Kenya. MAVWASCO was incorporated in 2009 as a limited liability company and is 100% owned by the County Government of Machakos. The mandate of MAVWASCO is to provide water and sanitation services within Mavoko Subcounty.
MAVWASCO's mandate is in line with the Constitution of Kenya (2010) , the Water Act, 2016 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6, which aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. MAVWASCO also aligns its operations with Vision 2030, which seeks to provide accessibility to sustainable, quality, and affordable water services.
The company has a service provision agreement (SPA) with Tanathi water works development agency and is licensed and regulated by the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) to supply water and provide sanitation services within its specified area of jurisdiction which includes Utawala, Joska, Kamulu, Syokimau, Katani, Mlolongo, Athiriver, Kinanie, Lukenya and Kyumbi areas .The company has a functional board of directors appointed from key stakeholders within the service area.
As at the 2019 population census, Mavoko Sub-County with an area of 835 km2 had a population of approximately 322,499. With growth and migration resulting from the current developments, the population is predicted to increase to approximately 500,000 by 2030. The average population growth rate is 3.5%, which is higher than the national average of 2.8%. (KNHPC. 2019)
The current water coverage is at about 67% of the service area while sanitation coverage is at about 15%. The customer base of MAVWASCO includes domestic, institutional, commercial and industrial customers with a 100% metering ratio.
